The New USAID Environment and Natural Resource Management Team Leader in Tanzania-Mr. Nathan Sage, and the Regional Team Lead, Ms. Lauridsen for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Wednesday, September 2022, paid a courtesy call on the National Carbon Monitoring Centre.
Welcoming the USAID delegation, Dr Deo Shirima on behalf of the Ag. NCMC Director Prof. Eliakimu Zahabu informed the delegates that the NCMC goal is to ensure Tanzania has the capacity to actively participate and benefit from international climate change mechanisms. The Centre emanated from the National REDD+ Strategy and Action Plan of 2013 supported by the Royal Norwegian Government financially since 2016 to date in its establishment phase. Currently, it is hosted at the Sokoine University of Agriculture under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Vice Presidents’ Office (VPO) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). NCMC‘s objective is to build the national capacity to measure, verify and report adequately on carbon emissions at the national and international levels.
He welcomed and appreciated the visit from the USAID delegates and looking forwards to further partnership with USAID, highlighting that strengthening national capacity on climate change mitigation and GHG MRV system, carbon financing project development in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector, research, and interventions on areas of baseline information generation and robust data storage and mining areas of potential collaboration. He finally passionately urged the delegates to consider support for long-term strengthening Centre’s capacity in meeting its national obligation through active impactful projects on GHG MRV systems and coordination.
In response, the USAID Environment and Natural Resource Management Team Leader in Tanzania Mr. Nathan Sage appreciate the work done at NCMC in strengthening the national capacity verify and report adequately on carbon emissions at the national and international level. He highlighted the potential of forming partnerships and strengthening cooperation between NCMC and USAID in line with USAID priorities related to climate change mitigation, carbon financing and national level capacity building on the environment and natural resource management in all aspects from project planning to implementation ensuring long term sustainability.
Finally, he expressed optimism and confidence in the ability of the NCMC to meet its obligation under a collective, active partnership with development partners and the willingness of the USAID to work together with NCMCto ensure future sustainably.
